oh so sure there are lots character-type that i like and seriously some of my favorite characters (like vimes, or neil, by example) that i pretty much adore don’t fit that particular type but honestly the very best way to make me go crazy about a character is to let them get in the way… Continue reading

Tony is shown another world were just a tiny detail changed the decisive battle during the Civil War and allowed for Steve and Tony to fight side by side and work together, finally. Happy smiling faces and significant looks, included.
What If? Civil War
#and you notice what the one detail was? tony asked for help and then STEVE DIDN’T FUCKING ELECTROCUTE HIS GODDAMNED SUIT
Fuck it I have way too many thoughts (not necessarily interesting BUT I CAN’T SHUT UP ANYMORE) about this scene and the original one, not even in response to those tags i’m just reblogging them because they’re very good.
This got long (not very surprising I did decide to rant in the post instead of the tags), so, rant behind the read more:
First the Tony to whom all that is happening doesn’t know what’s happening in canon, so see that moment where Steve withdraws his hand when they were about to shake hands? Now we (and 616!Tony, who’s watching and drowning in guilt and grief) know that means he’s decided to at listen to what Tony has to say, but Tony doesn’t. To him what’s happening is that he admitted he wanted, needed Steve’s help, and in response Steve took a step back. Now maybe later he asks why clone!Thor was activated and he learns about the micro!EMP, but then again, maybe not. Even if he does – can you imagine what he must have felt like, knowing what Steve was willing to do? And if he doesn’t? If he never learn that Steve refusing to shake his hand was about Steve actually giving him a chance to talk?
I think about that a lot. (And then I cry.)
(seriously look at steve’s face. he doesn’t look like he’s very much ready to listen, honestly I’m not sure Tony bought himself enough good will at this point; I think fighting together and Tony unthinkingly sacrificing himself did just as much to Steve’s willingness to listen.)
Second it’s so fucking easy to take this what if issue and make it all about ‘how it’s all tony’s fault see if if only he had asked Steve for help’ and. Nope. The first part of the what if makes it actually very very clear the war and SHRA was coming with or without Tony. He made the decisions he did to minimize the damage and guess what? he succeeded. I’m not going to blame him for not somehow intuiting the exact course that would lead to no damage at all. He made the situation better. He didn’t manage the perfect score, but it’s completely unfair to expect him to solve such a huge problem all by himself without taking any wrong turn at all, and no one should expect that of him anyway. (the general opinion in universe is to blame tony for all of it. Not for not dealing with the situation perfectly, but somehow for causing it. WHICH HE DIDN’T. and at no point does tony contest this BECAUSE HE DOES EXPECT HIMSELF TO HAVE NAVIGATED THIS WHOLE SITUATION PERFECTLY. NOPE. I’M NOT OKAY. is it too much to ask at least the fandom not to blame him for not being perfect and not making all the right decisions??) EVEN THE ONE SHOWING HIM THOSE ALTERNATE PATHS TELLS HIM NO ONE IS EXPECTING HIM TO KNOW PERFECTLY THE CONSEQUENCES OF HIS ACTIONS EXCEPT HIMSELF. just. this totally backfired if the goal was ‘don’t blame yourself for not having perfect hindsight you couldn’t predict steve’s death’ because instead he gets into ‘i didn’t predict it I COULD HAVE AVOIDED IT IF…’ and. tony bby no.
Ehm.
Back to the point. Which is mostly Steve’s stubbornness and the ethics of using a handshake to disable Tony’s armor and whether or not it’s reasonable to expect Tony to ask for help at this point in canon.
So eh! Here’s the thing. pretending to be defeated/willing to join them/wanting to talk so a villain will get in range for you to pull a surprise attack while his guard is down is total legitimate trick for heroes to pull and no one ever think twice about it. Seriously. You know you’ve seen the trope before. Like, you would totally expect Tony to pretend to turn against his team to join the villain in order to back-stab them right? And not just Tony! So. What Steve does here (in 616)? Totally not unprecedented.
Except, of course, you do that because you know the villain’s not genuine in his attempt at talking. Because you expect him to backstab you at any moment and no alliance could ever be lasting. Because you think he’s only out to corrupt you and there’s no true compromise because you would be the only one giving up any of your goals/ideals so he would get all he wants. there’s just no talking with people like that. No redemption possible. Well, maybe, but for let’s take them out so there’s no more casualties we can maybe talk later. When they’re not a danger to everyone else.
Yep, that would have to be Steve’s mindset at this moment. That or he’s actually turning on his friend and refusing to talk and tricking him into believing he would. You know. When I think about what was going through Steve’s head in that moment it’s just REALLY AWFUL.
So yeah that goes back to Sakuratsukikage’s tags about Tony asking for help, making it personal, making it about them, not about ideals, breaking through Steve, breaking through the story he’0s built about what’s going with Tony here. Because by keeping strictly professional, strictly about ideals, Tony is letting Steve think of him only in abstract terms, only about his own feelings of betrayal, and simply ignoring all that he knows about Tony as a person, all that would tell him that Tony really wants to talk, really wants to avoid the fight, really wants to find a way they’re both okay with. Steve gets so lost into ‘I’m fighting for what’s right’ that he forgets that it’s Tony, his best friend, trying to talk to him, and only remembers their friendship in what it’s doing to him, not in what it tells him about Tony. Just. Steve 😦
But. Anyway. Tony is standing before a group of people who used to be his friends but have already judged him. Steve is about to betray him, make him helpless just before starting a fight. I already said what it tells us about the way Steve is thinking about him right then.
Are those really the people you want tony to be emotionally honest with? To leave himself so open with? To give that kind of emotional vulnerability? I don’t know you but wow personally i really really don’t like the idea. I know it turns out for the best but. Nope. Not letting out enormous personal vulnerabilities in front of people who don’t care and are ready to hurt you. Nope.
Of course though this works both ways? If it’s unfair to expect tony to open so much at that point of canon, I guess that it’s also unfair to ask Steve, who has been shot at in the helicarier for disagreeing with Hill/refusing an order that was unconstitutional BEFORE THE LAW HAD EVEN PASSED, who was basically ambushed into this and has been hunted for a while already (headcanon that Tony wanting him brought in BECAUSE he wanted to talk to him and had literally no other way to get in touch with him. Oh Tony you’re doing this all wrong), to actually take himself the leap of faith and listen here, without some sort of sign that yes it is his friend talking to him. 😦
Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if a little part of Steve’s reaction here is because Tony isn’t asking for his help, isn’t acting like he wants or needs his help, he just wants him out of the way of his grand plans, and eh he could use the help. Possibly. Which resonates with the incursions storyline and Steve dreaming ‘he laughs at you. A lot’. :(((( So basically Steve going ‘he doesn’t need me, he doesn’t want my help, THIS IS ALL JUST A TRICK’. (actual Steve!feels! brief ones ok but. I’ll take what I can.) Meanwhile having to work without Steve, having to actually go AGAINST him is basically tearing Tony’s soul apart. BUT HE’S GOING TO DO IT OK HE HAS TO AND HE GETS THAT SINCE STEVE THINKS SO HE MUST BE AN HORRIBLE PERSON AN ACTUAL MONSTER BUT HE DOESN’T CARE well, no he does BUT IT DOESN’T MATTER OK IT’S NECESSARY AND HE’LL DO IT.
:((((((
(Steve admiring tony’s ingenuity and briliiance and technological marvel and all he can and does achieve with it and thinking he can’t measure up AND ASSUMING TONY THINKS SO TOO EVERY TIME IT LOOKS LIKLE TONY’S GOING AWAY FROM HIM. Steve. steve no.just looks at him he’s desperate HE VALUES YOUR ‘GOODNESS’ AND’MORAL INTEGRITY’ AND BRAVERY AND EVERYTHING SO FUCKING MUCH MORE AND. :((((( )
So of course Tony’s asking for help, saying he needshis help is going to get through, As is Tony saying he is better with him by his side :(((
(it actually makes me quietly furious. tony you don’t need his approval/validation to be a good person or a hero, you already are. you might be better with him at his side BUT YOU’RE GOOD ENOUGH JUST ON YOUR OWN :((((( )
