I wonder how many people in the fandom remember that when Gamzee is scared of something he tries to avoid the issue as much as he can.

Actually, it could be easily said that avoidant coping strategies are a large part of Gamzee’s character. Ever since the beginning we’ve known that Gamzee is a believer in miracles, which he can have faith in to feel that everything will be alright in the end. And if calling for a miracle doesn’t work, like how he failed to calm Karkat the first time Sollux died by telling him to wait for one, then he’ll try to avoid the problem (see: how we saw him chilling on his computer after the attempt to comfort, feeling like an asshole, and also in the second time Sollux died and Gamzee just let Karkat emote, not reacting himself, until he could actually point out that Sollux was okay as his way of helping Karkat). Even his usage of sopor, however unintentionally, could be a way of avoidance coping due to how the drug effects his ability to interact with the world.
Another way he avoids negativity in his life is through denial.

In how he doesn’t outright say that *he* just cut off Tavros’ head, only that it was something that happened he’s sad about.

And perhaps subconsciously in how he believed being essentially abandoned by his lusus is just how family is. Where the narrative acknowledges that he had “a lousy upbringing” in contrast to his belief.

Knowing this about Gamzee, seeing fans react to updates that include Gamzee with fear that he will murder again just completely ignores that with his fear of upsetting Karkat he knows better than to do something so outright like that. If Gamzee is going to do something he should know is bad it’s going to be something he knows he can hide (do I even need to remind everyone of how sneaky he’s been for LE), or something he can get someone else to take responsibility for him, to help him clean up his own messes (spilling the secret of his relationship with Terezi to Rose who then becomes interested in auspistizing them). Because he’s childish like that, and just really bad at dealing with conflict responsibly.

Anway, I’m not sure I have much to add here except that it’s really interesting to think about on a meta level in regards to how sometimes the fandom compartmentalizes Gamzee’s states of being to the point of acting like he’s a different person on and off sopor? Which I don’t think is accurate, but I don’t think Gamzee would object to, either – he’d be just fine with us deciding that when he’s calm, he’s not culpable for the things he does when he’s lashing out, or when he’s scheming.
