Young Viktor & Johnny Weir
@judarchan OMG *_*
IT SURE AS SHIT WAS AND LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING:
Figure skating is a surprisingly homophobic sport, in part due to how flamboyant that was. So much so that young gay men are openly harassed and gay women even worse so. Johnny Weir was repeatedly called Johnny Queer publicly by spectators, coaches, other skaters, etc. Judges were unbelievably harsh on him, even if he had a technically perfect program (which, he often did). Why? Because he was flamboyant off the ice just as much as he was on. Even though he never really came out until the tail end of his career, he never denied his sexuality when people asked either. He maintained a neutral voice, which everyone assumed to mean he was gay, and for that simple fact, he was shit on and harassed and scored low consistently. Broadcasters even went so far as to question his gender on public television and accuse him of being a, and I quote, “Tranny”.
Even commentators like Scott Hamilton would admit on multiple occasions that he was one of the strongest skaters in the men’s division but he wouldn’t place because he was too “controversial”. Mind you, this was in the latter half of his career. When he first started out, he won the Grand Prix twice, placed third at worlds and won Junior Worlds when he was still establishing his career. And the minute he came into his own he was rejected.
And you know how he handled it? He smiled and continued being himself. People would ask him if he would tone down his programs and he would actively refuse because he did not want to compromise who he was.
So for YOI to pay tribute to this skater that I have looked up to since childhood brought so many tears to my eyes. Try telling me that this show is fanservice or queer-baiting, I dare you. Because if you knew anything about skating and the politics behind it, you would know that this show is breaking down huge barriers, and not just in the Japanese culture, but an enormously international one as well. Paying tribute to an icon like Johnny Weir isn’t just a tribute to figure skating, it’s a tribute to the LGBT+ community, however subtle it may be.
I’m a feminist and I’d also like to be a good trans ally. Why are there so many trans people who characterize playing with dolls/wearing dresses/liking pink as a sign they were a girl, and why do some say that their interest in sports was a sign they were a boy? It may not be a community-wide issue, so forgive me that. It strikes me as essentialist and somewhat tactless. Is it okay for me to question people who say things like that? Thank you for your insight!
thedeadflag: This is actually a form of institutional violence that trans people, largely trans women, face. To copy-paste from a previous post I made on this matter: Growing up, I had a few trans lady friends who were hyped about being openly/visibly butch and/or gnc trans women when they began transitioning. Three of the bunch… Continue reading I’m a feminist and I’d also like to be a good trans ally. Transgender woman says she was fired hour after winning KFC job in Virginia
A Richmond woman, Georgia Carter, was offered a job at a local KFC, only to have the offer immediately rescinded when the hiring manager saw from her driver’s license (which still lists her as male) that she is transgender. She was told that she couldn’t have the job because the management “didn’t know which bathroom she could use.” The story broke yesterday, February 27th 2016.
In Virginia, there aren’t currently any laws which protect transgender people from discrimination on the job.
I’ll keep an eye on the story as it develops, for ways to support Ms. Carter and to demonstrate to Virginia’s hiring managers that this is unacceptable. If you hear of something, send it on in.
KFC fired the franchise manager.
Here’s the message I received from KFC when I asked about the incident on their Facebook page:
“Thank you for your message, Kelly. KFC’s policy is to treat everyone fairly, equally and with respect, and we do not tolerate discrimination of any kind. Upon learning of this allegation, the franchisee who owns this Richmond restaurant conducted an immediate and thorough investigation. The manager has been terminated for violating the franchisee’s anti-discrimination policy, which is inclusive of gender identity and sexual orientation. The franchisee’s leadership has also had a conversation with Ms. Carter, offering her employment at this restaurant or any of their Richmond area KFC restaurants, effective immediately. Additionally, the franchisee is emphasizing sensitivity and compliance with their policies to keep this from happening again.”
