Magneto’s failure.

New Mutants #61
March 1988
Bret Blevins, Terry Austin,
and Louise Simonson

And this is why us never seeing any interactions between Magneto and Doug since his return is such a loss.

Imagine Magneto reading the reports from the Necrosha event as they come in and then getting to THAT paragraph, the one where Dani and Sam report that not only was Doug one of those brought back as one of Selene’s servant, but that thanks to Warlock and Magik, they had managed to free him and restore him to “proper” life.

Then imagine Magneto barrelling down the corridors of the base, flaring magnetic field pushing EVERYONE out of his way, and none too gently, as he makes his way to the medical wing at top speed.

Then imagine his feelings seeing the first of his New Mutants to die, the first real loss to have made an impact on him since the death of his daughter, sitting up in bed and looking perfectly normal, and perhaps greeting him with a smile, the exact opposite of the scene pictured above.

I wonder what he’d have said… or if he’d be able to say anything at all.
